In the past, if pressed, I probably would not have said I had a specific interest in astronomy. But, I've always had this interest in objects in space. Tell me more about the planet Mercury or give me some amazing numbers on the diameter of the Milky Way galaxy. However, in finding this PBS Digital Studios series, it turns out that I'm an astronomy nut!
Written and hosted by Phil Plait, this series of 46 short episodes is almost the perfect way to dive into this huge field. I was originally drawn to the series when I noticed there were individual episodes on each of the planets in our solar system. Awesome. But, planets are just the tip of the iceberg. Stars are even more interesting. And, the whole thing culminates in a hugely fascinating look at the universe and "deep time" (my personal favorite episode).
I've now watched most of the episodes at least twice. I'd recommend starting from episode one, but, on subsequent viewings, I've started at episode 9 (Introduction to the Solar System). If you start to lose interest in some of the early topics, skip to that, as it would be a shame to miss all the excellent information that follows.
Finally, let me say that each episode is a short lecture; they are not pure entertainment. Mr. Plait (who is excellent) presents the topics in a very accessible manner and they move quickly. Even so, if you are not interested in this type of stuff, it may not capture your imagination and grab you. But, if you are.... wow!
